Technorati does a nice site re-design

The new Technorati is cool. I happened upon it this morning, and I was shocked to see I had made the main page. Not once but 5 times
Then I realized the website looked completely different than it used to and that the stories on the main page were there as a part of personalization effort the old website had.
The information is well laid out and easy to navigate.
I’d have to say I like this design over the old one. What do you think of the new Technorati?

I think Technorati is bad in general. I have tried that site maybe 6-7 times, never for more than a few minutes. As a blog search engine, the results are very poor in my opinion.
Forget the new look, why do you like Technorati? Is there something I am missing? I hope it is something beyond a blog search engine, I have never stuck around long enough to find out.

I use the search functions occassionally. As you said, they’re a mess. They even include English and Non-English results together (which is retarded for search, IMHO).
But, they do very quick auto-discovery of links. So they’re a great source of getting a feel for the “Who’s who” in the blogosphere. If you’re blogging, it’s a useful resource to find related articles.
That said, they’ve taken in many millions of venture capital, and some days the website doesn’t even pull up right. I’d say I have a very mixed view of Technorati.

Darren, can you explain, “quick auto-discovery of links”?

Sure, every time a blog pings Technorati (many of them do), they update the backlinks to your website.
That’s why it’s a really good tool to use to look up related stories, potential link partners and that type of thing.
Here’s an example. It also basis scores on link “authority” so it’s a good measure to see what they think of websites. They update instantly, as opposed to Google or Yahoo.

Thanks for the explanation Darren.
I have seen many people using: http://www.domain.com at Technorati. I figured it was a backlink function (similiar to link: in Google). I was not aware that pinging Technorati updates links automatically. I also did not look at it in the way of finding related stories and potential link partners (I guess some have already linked to you though.)
