SMO is a fun buzzword that’s making the rounds, but the practice seems very limited in what it can actually accomplish. When I say that, keep in mind, I’m speaking specifically about the type of person who reads “Digg” and how they relate to your website. If you don’t have a technically savvy audience, it’s doubtful that SMO can help.

If your website has a savvy technical audience, then SMO can help

The main audience of sites like Reddit and Digg are tech-heads. If you sell flowers from your website, it’s extremely doubtful that anyone will be interested in a story that you write and that’s submitted to Digg. You’ll be buried based on your topic. And even if you were to get to the top somehow, it would still have a very limited affect on your bottom line. Why? Because these aren’t your customers.

SMO is yet another buzzword that represent a phenomena that can be helpful, and maybe even sustainable, but you need to separate the hype from the facts.
