Search Marketing: A World Of Meaningful Acronyms
The field of search marketing is constantly expanding. Let’s look at some of the more recent entrants to the field. We’ve had the obvious SEO, but don’t forget the discipline of PPC management and now SMO (Social Media Optimization). Undoubtedly this trend will continue, as more and different methods of online communication continue to proliferate.
SMO is hot these days, thanks to the popularity of Digg and the like.
Social Media Optimization (SMO) is a way to optimize web sites so they would be more easily connected or interlaced with online communities and community websites, also called social media sites. Methods of SMO include adding RSS feeds, adding a “Digg This” button, and incorporating third party community functionalities like Flickr photo slides and galleries or YouTube videos. Social media optimization is a form of search engine marketing.
Of course, the excitement of optimizing for Digg may have already worn off, but the concept of pushing products through YouTube videos is still in its’ infancy. For any of these new fields to emerge, they require a great bit of expertise in the field, and they require quick learning and the ability to stop on a dime. Like any emerging field, there are only two types of marketers: the quick and the dead.
What big moves do you see on the horizon for search marketing? What’s your current favorite acronym?
